With a permanent collection of more than 79,000 works of art, the Art Gallery of Ontario is among the most distinguished art museums in North America. In 2008, with a stunning new design by world-renowned architect Frank Gehry, the AGO opened its doors to the public amid international acclaim. Highlights include Galleria Italia, a gleaming showcase made of wood and glass running the length of an entire city block along the Gallery's façade; and the feature staircase, spiraling up through the roof of Walker Court and into the new contemporary galleries above. From the extensive Group of Seven collection to the dramatic new African art gallery; from the cutting-edge works in the Vivian & David Campbell Centre for Contemporary Art to Peter Paul Rubens' masterpiece The Massacre of The Innocents, a highlight of the celebrated Thomson Collection, there is truly something for everyone at the AGO.

Julian Schnabel: Art and Film. American art superstar Julian Schnabel has spent his life pushing the limits of painting and crossing artistic boundaries as an award-winning filmmaker. Now, for the first time, a major retrospective examines the connections between painting and film in Schnabel's work, tracing how his paintings exist in dialogue with the cinema and revealing the rich interplay between the two media. Julian Schnabel: Art and Film surveys Schnabel's work as a painter from the mid-1970s to the present and features more than 25 key works. The exhibition will occupy the entire fifth floor of the Art Gallery of Ontario's Vivian & David Campbell Centre for Contemporary Art. Organized by the Art Gallery of Ontario. Betty Goodwin: Work Notes will feature more than 100 of the artist's sketchbooks from the AGO's special collections, many never before exhibited. Agnes Martin: Work Ethic presents The Islands, a series of seminal works on loan from the Whitney Museum of American Art, which invite the viewer to explore the subtleties of Martin's artistic vocabulary and her remarkable commitment to the work of painting.

The Grange Prize Exhibition 2010 – Josh Brand, Moyra Davey, Leslie Hewitt, Kristan Horton. This special exhibition highlights the 2010 nominees for The Grange Prize, an annual partnership between Aeroplan and the AGO that recognizes the best in international contemporary photography. This year's nominating jury, led by AGO Assistant Curator of Photography Sophie Hackett, focused on artists who “challenge us to think about what a photograph can be.” The Grange Prize Exhibition 2010 will feature works by all four nominated artists – Canadians Moyra Davey and Kristan Horton, and Americans Josh Brand and Leslie Hewitt. The Grange Prize is Canada's largest photography prize, awarding $50,000 to the winner and $5000 to the runners-up – granting a total of $65,000 to photographic artists each year. It is the only major Canadian art prize voted on by the public, who can vote in person at the exhibition or online at www.thegrangeprize.com. A concurrent exhibition of work by The Grange Prize 2010 shortlisted artists will be on view at the Museum of Contemporary Photography at Columbia College, Chicago, 2010's partner institution, Oct 8, 2010 - Jan 30, 2011. The Grange Prize, launched in 2007, is a partnership between Aeroplan and the AGO. Contemporary programming at the AGO is supported by the Canada Council for the Arts.

Toronto Now – Allyson Mitchell is a Toronto-based "maximalist" artist working predominantly in sculpture, installation and film. Since 1997, Mitchell has been melding feminism and pop culture to play with contemporary ideas about sexuality, autobiography, and the body, largely through the use of reclaimed textile and abandoned craft. Her work has been exhibited in galleries and festivals across Canada, the US, Europe and East Asia. Mitchell is creating new work for this exhibition, the fourth in the AGO's Toronto Now series, which is housed in the street-front Young Gallery and is free to the public. Organized by the Art Gallery of Ontario. Toronto Now is generously supported by The Contemporary Circle. Contemporary programming at the AGO is supported by the Canada Council for the Arts.

Henry Moore. Organized by Tate Britain in collaboration with the Art Gallery of Ontario ... more
Henry Moore. Featuring more than 50 major works, most never before seen in Canada, Henry Moore re-examines the work of the 20th century's greatest sculptor. The exhibition focuses on works from Moore's early period – the 1920s and 30s. It was during this time that Moore created his most radical and experimental work, establishing his distinct vision of the human form and leading to one of the most celebrated artistic careers of the past century. “In contrast to the dominant view of Moore,” says Tate Britain curator Chris Stephens, “we propose that he presented the body as abject, erotic, vulnerable, violated and visceral.” The exhibition will be on view in the AGO's Henry Moore Sculpture Centre. Organized by Tate Britain in collaboration with the Art Gallery of Ontario.

Inuit Modern: Art from the Samuel and Esther Sarick Collection. Featuring work by David Ruben Piqtoukun, Kenojuak Ashevak, Karoo Ashevak, and Lucy Tasseor, among others ... more
Inuit Modern: Art from the Samuel and Esther Sarick Collection. A sprawling retrospective on the transformation of Inuit art in the 20th century, Inuit Modern will feature over 175 works from one of the world's most comprehensive privately held collections of Inuit art – the Samuel and Esther Sarick Collection. In response to a rapidly changing Arctic environment, Inuit have had to cope with the transition from a traditional lifestyle to the disturbing realities of globalization and climate change. Inuit art in the latter half of the 20th century embodies the evolution of a modern Inuit aesthetic that springs from an ancient cultural context, creating a new hybridized art form. Featuring work by David Ruben Piqtoukun, Kenojuak Ashevak, Karoo Ashevak, and Lucy Tasseor, among others. On Sat 6 Nov, 2010, at the AGO, an international symposium will be held to celebrate the exhibition's opening, at which curators, writers, scholars, and artists will explore and discuss the exhibition's complex and divergent themes. Organized by the Art Gallery of Ontario.

Maharaja: The Splendour of India's Royal Courts. Organized in collaboration with the Victoria & Albert Museum, London ... more
Maharaja: The Splendour of India's Royal Courts. This fall, the Art Gallery of Ontario opens its doors to the riches of India's maharajas. Organized in collaboration with the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, Maharaja: The Splendour of India's Royal Courts is the first exhibition to comprehensively explore the opulent world of the maharajas and their unique culture of artistic patronage. The exhibition spans from the beginning of the 18th century to the end of British rule in 1947, and concludes with a look at the legacy of the maharajas today. Over 200 opulent objects are featured, including paintings of spectacular royal processions, royal costumes and traditional dress, ceremonial weapons, including daggers, swords, and matchlock guns, elaborate jewellery commissioned from the French house of Cartier and prized photographs by artists such as Man Ray and Cecil Beaton. Key works include: The famed Patiala Necklace, Cartier's largest-ever commission, containing 2,930 diamonds and weighing almost a thousand carats; a life-sized model elephant adorned with textiles and trappings, accompanied by a silver howdah from the early 19th century; the Silver Carriage of Bhavnagar from 1900; and the Golden Throne of Maharaja Ranjit Singh.
Playing with Pictures: The Art of the Victorian Photocollage. Organized by The Art Institute of Chicago ... more
Playing with Pictures: The Art of the Victorian Photocollage. Shortly after the birth of photography (and long before today's digital photographic manipulations), aristocratic Victorians experimented with a photocollage, combining photographs and watercolours in sometimes-surreal combinations. The photocollages featured in Playing with Pictures reflect their makers' cultural knowledge and social connections, as well as a refreshing dose of humour. Many of the works in the exhibition have rarely, if ever, been displayed. Organized by The Art Institute of Chicago.
Drama and Desire: Artists and the Theatre. Conceived by Guy Cogeval, president of the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, the exhibition includes over 100 paintings, drawings and theatrical maquettes, by masters such as Edgar Degas, Eugène Delacroix, Jacques-Louis David, Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, William Blake, Aubrey Beardsley, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, and Édouard Vuillard ... more
Drama and Desire: Artists and the Theatre. Many of the greatest artists of the 19th century shared a profound fascination with the theatre and its themes of triumph and destruction, love and despair. This summer, the Art Gallery of Ontario gives centre stage to key artworks by these artists with Drama and Desire: Artists and the Theatre. Conceived by Guy Cogeval, president of the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, the exhibition includes over 100 paintings, drawings and theatrical maquettes, by masters such as Edgar Degas, Eugène Delacroix, Jacques-Louis David, Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, William Blake, Aubrey Beardsley, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, and Édouard Vuillard. The works were selected from the collections of some of the world's greatest museums, including the Louvre, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Musée d'Orsay, the British Museum, and the Victoria & Albert Museum. The AGO has commissioned Gerard Gauci, set designer for Toronto's Opera Atelier, to make Drama and Desire an experience like no other. Visitors will enter the exhibition by walking "onstage" through a life-size 18th-century set; the works will be displayed using enhanced lighting, sound and video components as well as innovative theatrical devices; and a full-scale re-creation of an early 20th-century theatre maquette will mark the finale of the exhibition. Drama and Desire is co-produced by MART – Museo di Arte Moderna e Contemporanea di Trento e Rovereto, the Direction des Musées de Marseille, and the Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto. This exhibition features exceptional loans from the Musée d'Orsay.

Barbara Kruger: Untitled (It). In partnership with Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival, the AGO presents a newly commissioned work by renowned American artist Barbara Kruger, installed along the signature glass skirt of the AGO's outer façade. The installation, which spans 650 feet, responds to CONTACT's theme for 2010, "Pervasive Influence", which considers how photography informs and transforms human behaviour, especially via the medium's connections to mass media, advertising, consumerism, and propaganda. Kruger's installation marks the first time the AGO has exhibited artwork on the exterior of its transformed Frank Gehry-designed building.
Canadian Girls Say... Girl Guides of Canada / Guides du Canada and the AGO are pleased to present a photography exhibition that speaks volumes about what girls care about in their communities.

Bobbie Burgers is known for her luscious bouquets, blown-up botanicals and pastoral landscapes which focus on sumptuous colour and wild movement. Believing that the tragedy of beauty is its inevitability to fade, she captures that fleeting moment and makes one pause and absorb the wonder of what surrounds us. Burgers' strong, assured brush work and keen sense of colour are the essence of her work, which has become richer, denser and more complex as her ideas rapidly evolve. With almost 50 solo exhibitions, Burgers has attained international stature.

Janna Watson is a recent graduate of the Ontario College of Art and Design, who has enjoyed early success in her painting career. Janna's work includes a beautiful freeness, a carefully balanced pairing of loose painting and stain combined with perfectly placed architectural lines. Janna says she is inspired by the contours of the natural landscape and the harsh outlines of urbanity. Most of her paintings are on wood panels coated in resin, giving a deep saturation to the swirling stains of colour and sharp lines below.

Flirting with Bling is a delightful and thought-provoking exhibition that explores representations of culture, beauty and fashion through contemporary and historical artworks... Flirting with Bling is a delightful and thought-provoking exhibition that explores representations of culture, beauty and fashion through contemporary and historical artworks. It provides an opportunity for viewers to question how we create and celebrate culture through photography, painting, and installation. Flirting with Bling offers an array of accomplished and provocative artists, some of whom are widely known here, and others who may be new to Toronto audiences. The inspiration for the show was Set of Calabashes, by contemporary Brazilian artist Marepe. This 24-piece installation of abstract calabashes made of aluminum exercises a magnetic pull on the viewer, as does Iain Baxter&'s inflatable signature Ampersand, rising and falling in the centre of the Gallery. Other fascinating works include Ramón Serrano's Horizonte drawings, which evoke the skyline of utopia as seen from his native Cuba; paintings by automatist Françoise Sullivan and Natalie Munk; text and pixel-art video work by Sharon Switzer, photography artists such as Frank Mädler, Lori Newdick, Grit Schwerdtfeger, Roxanne Lowit, Barbara Astman, Sarah Moon, Erwin Blumenfeld, George Platt Lynes, Edmund Kesting, Horst P. Horst and Irving Penn.

Trudy Golley & Paul Leathers – ANIMA MOTRIX: motive spirit. In this exhibition, ceramic artist, Trudy Golley and studio metalsmith, Paul Leathers join forces to create artworks that capitalise on a materially based relationship which started in 1998. Referring to the compelling force exerted by objects that engage the viewer's gaze, the exhibition's title is drawn from the term coined by Johannes Kepler (1609) to explain gravitational force — anima motrix (Latin, “motive spirit”). This provides a metaphor for the attraction that both resolved artworks and the unexpected solutions that develop within the creative process hold for artist and viewer alike: the object as lure. Caroline Marshall: Now. Caroline works with palette knives to apply oil paint mixed with cold wax giving her work a sculptural look. Her recent move to a small island near Kingston has affected her art: "It's barren in winter. January's cold, gray, white and black forms, cracking ice floes on the St. Lawrence, hard-packed snow on paths, the stillness... areas of intensity beside space. Life changes dramatically in May and June. Movement creeps onto the island. It is amazing and constant. Air currents control the many moods of the St. Lawrence, its forested shore and living things." Her recent work has been influenced more by nature than architecture. The end result implies something familiar, but undefined.

Joseph Sampson: Water Alive – oils on canvas ... more
Joseph Sampson: Water Alive – oils on canvas. Joe is an OCA graduate, focuses mainly on waterscapes. He uses water imagery to depict the dichotomy between movement and immobility. Whether the focus is cold, warm, tranquil or angry, water's magnificence strikes the viewer and an emotional response is evoked. From a distance the viewer is drawn towards what appears to be a photograph. Upon closer inspection, brushstrokes are revealed and the observer is made aware of the meticulous layers of brushwork, resulting in the illusion that the viewer is still for an instant, at the water's edge.

Fully Present – group exhibition. Curator: Farhad Nargol-O'Neill. Gallery director: Colette French. Artist / curator Farhad Nargol-O'Neill has called together twelve artists – fellow travelers – for an exposition of works. His eyes and senses tell him that the creation of these works has involved the transfer of part of each artist's being into these objets d'art, so that the artists are truly present in the art in a real and fundamental way. All are welcome to view these works and open themselves to experiencing the relationship between these soulful expressive objects, and themselves. A fine collection of much that is best in Canadian art, this exhibition gives an excellent sense of where we have come from, and (in part) where we are going. Artists: Ray Cattell, Gary Stark, Pat Fairhead, Farhad Nargol-O'Neill (curator), Joan Dubros, Mary Jane Holmes Baillie, Bruce Ferreira-Wells, Andrew Cheddie Sookrah, Homa Ismaili, Jon Riosa, Nathan Cyprys, Ottilie Mason.

Farhad Nargol-O'Neill: Animas Res – Soul Objects II – solo exhibition. Gallery director: Colette French (colettefrench@securenet.net). This exhibition is comprised of works of sculpture, sculptural works in bas-relief, and examples of automatic writing. All works function as individual repositories of the soul of the creator – more than mnemonic devices, they exist corporeally and in multiple realms at once. They assert belief and the truth behind experience. They are objects which take into account the places the artist has been, experienced, the ideas and faith notions that have determined his art and the nature of his investigations. The nature of a work of art as a transubstantiated soul-object, the relationship between the artist and viewer and the the art object – these are all represented in both process and result.

Marvyne Jenoff solo show: Wide Silence, Round Sound: lyrical conceptual watermedia paintings based on text. This series expresses the interplay of regularity and variation, of rigidity (the grids that surround us) and softness. Each painting is based on a phrase written by the artist, who is known for her poetry and fiction. The words of each phrase form an integral part of the image; the phrase and the image become a meditative whole. The materials are watercolour, acrylic mediums, and permanent markers applied in several layers on watercolour paper. The works are 30" x 22" and smaller. Ram Samocha: The Restless Line. Accompanying The Restless Line is a critical essay by emerging curator Robin Selk, and an artist's catalogue authored by Ram Samocha. The opening with live performance painting on Sat 2 Oct coincides with Scotiabank Nuit Blanche. Peace Talks will be a test of endurance as Samocha tackles multiple canvases with exhilarating purpose and speed, stretching the limits of his anthropomorphic, gestural style. In 1999 Samocha spearheaded the germinal group show Explosive Drawing at the Hamumheh Gallery in Tel Aviv, Israel, blurring the line between artist and curator. His curatorial essay for this collection of contemporary Israeli drawings is intrinsic to the comprehension of Samocha's performative art practice today. "Drawing," Samocha wrote, is "that which transpires between two points." This statement is deceiving in its simplicity, for the two points to which he refers manifest in rich plurality. Samocha simultaneously addresses two literal points, which are gathered into dialogue by the drawn line, as well as the polarities of creator and receiver, the artist's studio and the gallery, immediacy and permanence, autonomous action and performance, etc. Since pinpointing both what drawing is and the many realms it balloons to encompass, Samocha has crafted an artistic practice that preys upon the fractal tensions between his "points". In the physically taxing public performance of drawing, Samocha grabs a hold of each point and attempts to muscle the two ever closer together. In spite of inherent tensions, he gathers these compressed energies into a coiled spring that finds release on black unstretched canvas. As the performance develops, what began as a tabula rasa explodes into a myriad accumulation of terse, waxy pigmented lines that scintillate with the dynamism of fireworks. Samocha's staccato gestures layer rapidly, sedimenting into rhythms of colour and bold imagistic compositions. University of Waterloo Professor Doug Kirton writes, "The images burst from their dark grounds and emit a shimmering ineffably quality of light that draws the viewer closer, into intimate contact with the surface". (from Foreword to No Peace, 2009).

Traffic: Conceptual Art in Canada c. 1965-1980. Justina M. Barnicke Gallery, Hart House; University of Toronto Art Centre, University College; Blackwood Gallery, University of Toronto Mississauga; and Doris McCarthy Gallery, University of Toronto Scarborough. Curated by Grant Arnold, Catherine Crowston, Barbara Fischer, Michèle Thériault with Vincent Bonin, and Jayne Wark. Traffic is the first major account of the development of Conceptual Art in Canada from the mid-1960s to the early 1980s. By far one of the most important and long-lasting art movements of the 20th century, Conceptual Art originated within the social and political turmoil of the 1960s – from feminism and gay liberation to anti-racism and anti-war movements – and presented a profound challenge to the institution of art. This exhibition focuses on specific manifestations of Conceptual Art practices in urban centres across Canada, with particular attention to the inter-regional and international traffic that facilitated fertile cross-pollinations and exchanges amongst artists in this country. Organized by the Art Gallery of Alberta, Justina M. Barnicke Gallery (Hart House, University of Toronto) and the Vancouver Art Gallery, in partnership with the Leonard & Bina Ellen Art Gallery (Concordia University), and Halifax INK. Financially supported by the Museums Assistance Program of the Department of Canadian Heritage, and the Canada Council for the Arts.

Bearing a written message, an iconic image, a familiar or an eccentric brand, the T-shirt makes a statement, expressing individual choice in creating a personal image. As a basic clothing item, the T-shirt has become established as one of the most ubiquitous identity-defining elements. Five Canadian and international artists are invited by the Koffler Gallery to explore notions of migration and displacement between geographical territories, cultures and identities, designing silkscreen-based T-shirts to be disseminated through several Toronto stores. The project is presented in conjunction with Printopolis, an international symposium in Toronto, organized by Canada's leading printmaking centre, Open Studio, in celebration of its 40th Anniversary.
Exploring the T-shirt as a medium for mass-communication, Millie Chen, Emelie Chhangur, Hannah Claus, Stefan Hoffman and Dan Perjovschi engage with issues of race, gender, immigration and social justice. Based in Ridgeway, Ontario, Millie Chen delves into her Chinese heritage, reinterpreting the motifs of Chinoiserie wallpaper, disrupting the fictional Chinese idyllic scenes as projections of European desire, and adapting these patterns for the T-shirt. With a text-based T-shirt design, Toronto artist Emelie Chhangur addresses inter-racial relationships and the history of discrimination practiced against those of mixed racial identity.
Montreal artist Hannah Claus manipulates decorative patterns to explore the intersection of her two cultural identities, Native and European-Canadian, highlighting areas of overlap and transformation. Romanian artist Dan Perjovschi, who gained international recognition for his shrewd political cartoons that explore global events, contributes a T-shirt that comments on the immigrant condition. As a major destination for new arrivals in Canada, Toronto is a city where borders are constantly crossed between languages and customs.
Rotterdam-based Stefan Hoffman is the featured artist invited by Open Studio in conjunction with Printopolis. Hoffman creates work that ranges from site-specific wall and window interventions to object-based multiples, using silkscreen to layer images drawn from pictograms, urban signage, medical illustrations, and old heraldry books with visual elements derived on location. In a public event in-store during Scotiabank Nuit Blanche 2010, he will transfer his images to T-shirts brought in by the public, creating an original piece for each participant, re-emphasizing the democratic essence of this popular clothing item.

Maureen Paxton: Wish Well – a series of paintings exploring the oval and the locket in particular. Barbara Rehus: Saint's. Inspired by religious icons and their risas, the protective coverings occasionally used, Barbara Rehus endeavors to keep your standard saints and ordinary people from harm. Physical traits, history, and fantasy all play a role in determining who has been chosen and how they are to be kept safe. Portraits are painted in acrylic on panel, each cradled by a carved encaustic risa. Q&A with the artists will be moderated by Antonia Lancaster.

David Hoffos: Scenes from the House Dream. Curated by Shirley Madill. Organized and circulated by the Rodman Hall Art Centre, Brock University, with the assistance of the Southern Alberta Art Gallery, Lethbridge and TrepanierBaer Gallery, Calgary. David Hoffos' ongoing practice explores the uncanny and its relationship to the everyday; he creates narratives that transcend time and place. In Scenes from the House Dream, as with all previous work, Hoffos forms a pact with the viewer; he asks us to suspend disbelief and enter his world. What we find there may both disturb and delight.

Chris Chong Chan Fui and Yasuhiro Morinaga: HEAVENHELL. Curated by Andréa Picard. Presented in collaboration with the Toronto International Film Festival: Future Projections Program. Akira Kurosawa's perfectionism and determination are legendary. And yet, so dangerous were the brothel streets of Koganecho, Yokohama, that the director was forced to recreate them in a studio for a key scene in his classic noir, High & Low (1963). Heavenhell is a six-channel audio-visual installation that re-stages the scene in the once-untouchable location exhuming its spectres and its history.

The Nature of Words – Reg Beatty, Sigrid Blohm, Wendy Cain, Mira Coviensky, Margaret Lock, Will Rueter, Don Taylor. This exhibition brings together unique works by seven book artists, including accomplished private press printers, designer-bookbinders, papermakers, printmakers, and multi-media artists who use paper in assemblages and sculpture. Drawn in pen and ink or printed from wood and metal type; "written" in legible letters or imagined alphabets, careful calligraphy or gestural grafitti; cut from leather and paper or constructed with wire and thread; from single pages to books and scrolls, these works encourage viewers to think about the many possible ways that texts can be presented, and therefore about the nature of words.

Adaptation: Between Species. Featured artists: Allora & Calzadilla, Francis Alÿs, Cory Arcangel, John Bock, Olaf Breuning, Marcus Coates, Robyn Cumming, Mark Dion, FASTWÜRMS, Shaun Gladwell, Lucy Gunning, Nina Katchadourian, Louise Lawler, Hanna Liden, Hew Locke, Sandra Meigs, Rivane Neuenschwander & Cao Guimãres, Jeff Sonhouse, Javier Téllez and Michelle Williams Gamaker. Responding to the contemporary desire to go back to nature, The Power Plant's summer group exhibition highlights interspecies encounters. What happens when humans, animals, and the natural world meet? What forms of communication, miscommunication, intimacy, and exchange ensue? This exhibition presents the work of leading international artists alongside that of newer figures whose work has gained international attention. Ranging in tone from reverent to decidedly iconoclastic, and created with media including photography, film / video, sculpture, and painting, works in the exhibition examine the lure of primeval states and primitive behaviours, and the urge to understand oneself as wild at heart. Curated by Senior Curator of Programs Helena Reckitt. Support Donor: The Jack Weinbaum Family Foundation.

Main Gallery – Uros Jelic: Oil – an exhibition of mixed media paintings, depicting practices and mishaps of oil industry. “I began working on the “Oil” theme in 2009, with the intention of increasing awareness about these practices, but the bizarre chain of events in the Gulf of Mexico made this series incredibly timely.” – Uros Jelic. Paintings have expressive, experimental and intuitive quality with paint applied in various ways: spraying, dripping, using brush and roller, stamping, stenciling and drawing with paint sticks. This approach creates diverse textures while preserving the identity of materials used. The end result is figurative painting with deep exploration into the possible uses of media. Scotiabank Nuit Blanche is a free city-wide sunset-to-sunrise celebration of contemporary art. For one sleepless night, the familiar is discarded and Toronto is transformed into an artistic playground, as contemporary art installations are found in unlikely places throughout the city. Also, Toronto museums, galleries, art venues, neighbourhoods and institutions open their doors for one night only – all night long. Curators: Anthony Kiendl, Gerald McMaster, Sarah Robayo Sheridan, Christof Migone. Scotiabank Nuit Blanche is an annual signature event for the City of Toronto.

Highlights of Anthony Kiendl-curated Sound and Vision include projects by Daniel Lanois, Dan Graham
Highlights of Sarah Robayo Sheridan-curated The Night of Future Past include projects by Ryan Gander, plus a group of local and international performers influenced by the twin legacies of Marcel Duchamp and John Cage in the project entitled, Reunion

City-produced exhibition highlights – The City-produced exhibition projects will be positioned directly on the Yonge-University TTC subway line. Yonge Street will be entirely closed to car traffic between Bloor Street and Front Street, giving pedestrians safe and easy access to the exhibitions.
Curator Gerald McMaster's exhibition, entitled The Good Night, features 10 projects in and around Yorkville, from Yonge Street to St. George. Highlights include the Lower Bay Station, which will become an interactive landscape of light in Daan Roosegaarde's installation Interactive Landscape Dune, while the Village of Yorkville Park will feature a billion-year-old chunk of the Canadian Shield transformed into the pulsing heart of Mother Earth by Kent Monkman's alter-ego Miss Chief Eagle Testikle in Iskootao.
Anthony Kiendl will curate seven projects along the west side of Yonge Street from Dundas Street to Queen Street West in Sound and Vision. Nathan Phillips Square will be transformed into a sensory oasis as Daniel Lanois prepares, produces and performs the soundtrack to a multi-channel, multi-screen media experience in Later That Night at the Drive-In. Atop the new Podium Green Roof at City Hall, Dan Graham's Performance Café with Perforated Sides will feature one of the artist's world-renowned reflective pavilions, beckoning as a space for human interaction on a grand or intimate scale.
Sarah Robayo Sheridan's exhibition, entitled The Night of Future Past, will be located on the east side of Yonge from Carlton Street south to Queen Street. She will curate eight projects, including Ryan Gander's Just Because You Can Feel It, Doesnt Mean It's There, which will set Yonge-Dundas Square ablaze in a social sculpture of ambiguous designation but of unmistakable scale and presence. In Reunion, on the Ryerson Theatre Stage, the historic artistic convergence of the same name that occurred in 1968 will be celebrated and remounted by local and international performers influenced by the twin legacies of Marcel Duchamp and John Cage.
Christof Migone will curate 15 projects in the Financial District, straddling Yonge Street from Queen Street to Front Street. Should I Stay or Should I Go will feature Max Streicher's Endgame (Coulrophobia), which will either delight or frighten audiences who discover the giant inflatable clown heads wedged between two buildings in a back alley.
At Commerce Court, Davide Balula's performance, entitled The Endless Pace, will feature 60 dancers mimicking the passage of time in a clock formed from human movement. Kim Adams' Auto Lamp will become a beacon of light for night owls – a sculptural lighthouse on land at the corner of Yonge and Queen. At Brookfield Place, Martin Arnold and Micah Lexier have collaborated to present Erik Satie's Vexations - two pianos playing a score simultaneously 840 times over 12 hours – the first time this difficult score has been played in such a way and in such short a time.

Oswald DeLeón Kantule: From the Sea of Delirium. Oswaldo DeLeón Kantule “Achu” lives in London, Ontario but his art reflects the ancestral symbols and themes of the Kuna Nation of the San Blas islands of Panama. He believes that art is universal, providing a language for people from different realities to communicate with each other. Achu's art incorporates many elements found in daily Kuna life, including both the spiritual and real. As in many indigenous cultures, animals have special roles in the imagery and Achu integrates them into his art. Sea turtles are symbols of fertility, long life and eroticism; in Kuna mythology, they represent women and are the most beautiful creatures in the marine world. The snake represents the connection between life and death; it is also a symbol that indicates change. Then there is the hammock which is the centre or the heart of Kuna culture – it is the resting place at the end of the day; it is also used to cradle the mortal remains when we begin our voyage to our next life after death; it is the place from which our spiritual guides, sing to us everyday in our meeting house, relaying our collective memory through sacred songs. Achu first began as a self-taught artist and by 2004 he was the recipient of the prestigious Research Grant from the Smithsonian Institute's Museum of the American Indian. In 2001 he graduated with honours from the University of Panama with a degree in Fine Arts after winning Panama's National Institute of Culture's national painting competition in 1996. He has exhibited in more than 12 solo shows in the Americas and Europe, in addition to several group shows.

The Art Fuzion Revolution. Established in September 2008, The Fuzionists are a group of artists who collaborate through a "Drawing Fuzion" – a creation that communicates visual language through a unique and innovative method. These artists bring a diversity of skills and spring from various artistic careers, to advocate a free-style approach to the spontaneity of the work. On a single surface, individuals contribute a mark as an expression of themselves, which then develops through the rotation of each artist's position into a collaboration of images. As these images evolve into a rich symbolic language of signs and patterns, the Fuzionists begin to reflect the conceptual ideas that reference their inner thoughts and feelings. Fuzionists express the nature of freedom through a process, which utilizes free association when analyzing and shaping the title for the final piece.
Gilbert Garcin – Mister G. In his photographs, Gilbert poses as an ordinary "Mr. Everybody," dressed with an old overcoat ... more
Gilbert Garcin – Mister G. The gallery is pleased to present Gilbert Garcin's first commercial exhibition in Canada. Garcin was originally the owner of a lamp manufacturing company in Marseille, France. Following a workshop during the Rencontres Internationales in Arles, under the direction of Pascal Dolemieux, Garcin, at the age of 65, gave up his business and began his photographic career. His work has been exhibited and collected around the globe, which satisfies his goal of sharing his ideas on life and his perspective on the world with the public at large. In his photographs, Garcin poses as an ordinary 'Mr. Everybody,' dressed in an old overcoat. By placing himself, via the character he embodies, in absurd and inextricable situations, he invites us to ponder such philosophical quandaries as time, solitude and the weight of existence. His work raises a number of universal questions about the meaning of human existence. The crudeness of his technique, combined with the intelligence of his themes, reflects an earnestness that embodies both the character and the creator. In regards to his use of humour, Garcin believes, “The kind of exercise I am doing with my photographs can easily become pompous, pedantic, or overly serious. It's important to put a layer of humour right away, to let people enter into contact with the subject. Humour for me is not an end in itself, but thank goodness it's there!”

The artists create displays of intimacy, exploring portrait-based iconography as a lens to cast light on themselves and reflect it on the viewer. Person Place Thing – where textiles and sculpture meet. Cook, Harper and Schofield make work that is tactile, physical and large in scale – qualities that intensify a sensory encounter. They draw the viewer into embroidered, sewn and woven narratives of nature, identity and history. Skin & Bone: David R Harper and Stumble: Stephen Schofield are curated by Sarah Quinton, Curatorial Director at the Textile Museum of Canada. Faces & Mazes: Lia Cook is curated by Wendy Weiss and organized by the Robert Hillestad Textiles Gallery at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Drawing with Scissors: Molas from Kuna Yala. Curated by Max Allen ... more
Drawing with Scissors: Molas from Kuna Yala. The graphic panels on the mola blouses – done in reverse appliqué and embroidery – depict everything the Kuna see around them, from ancient plant and animal spirits to reimagined television news and Disney characters. Drawing with Scissors includes nearly 200 molas that are among the earliest known and those that were made yesterday, some by Domitila De León de Fernandez, the granddaughter of the leader of the 1925 Revolution. Photos in the exhibition show the matrilocal Kuna world of the San Blas Islands where, in order to protect old and successful traditions from the negative impacts of globalization, no outsider may own property. Drawing with Scissors is curated by Max Allen.

There Is No Bad Weather, Only Bad Clothing. Orenburg shawls are much loved in Russia for being very warm. In rural areas, every elderly woman wears a furry grey shawl indoors and outdoors during the long Russian winters. In cities, lace-knitted goat hair shawls are worn as a fashionable winter accessory. In the gallery you will see an Orenberg shawl that was made in the late 19th or early 20th century. This shawl also appears in the Soft Light section of Social Fabric, the Textile Museum of Canada's brand new interactive website. Discover it for yourself, in real and in virtual space. There Is No Bad Weather, Only Bad Clothing is curated by Natalia Nekrassova, curator at the Textile Museum of Canada.

Carnaval by Nicolas Ruel, runs at the Thompson Landry Gallery Stone Distillery space. Nicolas Ruel's honed artistic vision marries the vibrancy of the Venetian landscape with the allure of the anonymous masked reveller in his latest series, Carnaval. Each photograph, printed on stainless steel, captures a momentary encounter between artist and costumed Carnaval-goer, set against the architectural delights of Venice. Ruel's cinematographic process, and complete immersion in this ancient masquerade, has produced works of startling beauty and mystery. This exhibition, which should not be missed, is his most alluring and captivating series yet. Carnaval will be presented as part of Nuit Blanche on October 2nd.

Traffic: Conceptual Art in Canada c. 1965-1980 ... more
Traffic: Conceptual Art in Canada c. 1965-1980.
International conference.

Architect Philip Beesley's Hylozoic Ground – Canada's entry at the Venice Biennale of Architecture 2010. Complementing the physical installation of Hylozoic Ground in Venice, this exhibition at Urbanspace Gallery features photographs of previous versions in Mexico City, Montreal and Copenhagen. Hylozoic Ground is tomorrow's kinetic architecture that breathes and grows. Next-generation artificial intelligence, synthetic biology, and carbon-capture technology create an environment that is nearly alive. Tens of thousands of lightweight digitally fabricated components are fitted with microprocessors and proximity sensors that react to human presence. Arrays of touch sensors and shape-memory alloy actuators create waves of empathic motion, luring visitors into the eerie shimmering depths of a mystical landscape. See www.hylozoicground.com.
